Foodscapes Characters - What Are they Made of?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

4407You’re probably familiar with our Foodscapes™ Collection of products: posters, placards, greeting cards, postcards, stickers, bookmarks, temporary tattoos

Our Foodscapes are whimsical, edible characters in landscapes, seascapes, and natural scenes designed to inspire people of all ages to eat fruits and vegetables.

One of the most popular questions asked of our sales reps at conferences is: ‘what are those scenes made out of?’

Once a week, we will decode our Foodscapes posters for you. Let’s start with the ever-popular Sheep Poster:

Sheep Bodies: broccoli and cauliflower
Sheep Legs: pear stems
Sheep Heads: purple grapes
Sheep Eyes: black-eyed peas

Now that you have the “recipe” to create your own sheep, don’t be sheepish about sending in photos of the sheep you create. Try new variations of foodscapes sheep by using other fruit and veggies.

Please send us your photos of the sheep you make to angela@learningzonexpress.com and we will post them on the blog.

We had a fabulous food science video shoot on Saturday at Minnesota State University - Mankato. The student actors were so cute! Our host - 2009 AAFCS Teacher of the Year, Susan Turgeson - walked the students through several food science experiments in her Successful Food Science Lesson Plans.

This is the video footage that Angela and Linnea took from the shoot:

Look for this video in 2010!

Breakfast Because DVD Receives Great New Review

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Layout 1The School Library Journal recently reviewed our Breakfast Because DVD and gave it a shining nutrition and health review: “This inventive take on an important issue keeps the presentation fresh and entertaining, providing a resource that will be useful in health and life skills classes,” wrote the School Library Journal reviewer.

Read the whole review below:

“A healthy amount of practical, nutritionally sound information is assembled in this engaging, lively package. A group of diverse teens present the material in creative skits that span four segments. For example, “It’s the Smart Way to Start Your Day” offers facts about the importance of eating breakfast, driving home the benefits of increased energy, alertness, and metabolism. A close look at the Food Pyramid (instructors in Canada can choose an alternate segment which refers to the Canada Food Guide) provides a foundation for appealing breakfast ideas. Other topics covered include eating a healthy breakfast at fast food restaurants, how to read nutrition labels, choosing healthy breakfast cereals, vegetarian options, and foods requiring minimal preparation that can be eaten on-the-go. In a skit illustrating the importance of varied nutrients, the actors are dressed in costumes that represent various body organs (blood, bone, muscles, brain), as they lobby for a nutritious breakfast for a teenager and must do their best to cope with the deleterious effects a doughnut. This inventive take on an important issue keeps the presentation fresh and entertaining, providing a resource that will be useful in health and life skills classes.” —Meghann R. Matwichuk, University of Delaware, Newark
