How Can I Teach my Children & Students About Whole Grains?

September is Whole Grains Month & what better way to promote the month than by first answering the big question, "What exactly are whole grains?"

Whole grains, like whole wheat bread, are full of health-promoting nutrients and complex carbohydrates. They contain all parts of the grain, which helps keep your heart healthy and gives you long-lasting energy.

Examples of whole grains include:

-whole grain bread, cereals, tortillas, pasta and crackers
-oatmeal
-barley, quinoa, bulgar and wild rice
-wild rice
-popcorn

Watch out for refined grains! Refined grains, like white flour and white bread, have the fiber-rich bran and nutrient-rich germ stripped away during processing to give them a finer texture and improve the shelf life.

Example of refined grains include:

-pretzels
-enriched pasta
-cornflakes
-white rice
-saltine crackers
-grits
-white bread
