Keeping FACS Alive: Career and Business Development in Illinois

promoting-facs-guideThis summer Learning ZoneXpress has been asking teachers how they are keeping FACS Alive in their classrooms and schools. We were thrilled with the response and are happy to share the stories. We would love to hear from you! Help us spread the awareness of FCS in the classroom today and share your story with us. Long live “Home Ec”!

Today’s story…

At Lanphier High School in Springfield Illinois our FCS department is booming with students and talent! Not only do we have a fully functioning traditional FCS program but our students also have created their own small businesses within our school. Our students have created their own catering company called Lions Gourmet, where they cater gourmet teacher luncheons to our staff each week. They also host banquets where they make and serve all of the food. Students in these classes use their profits to go on a culinary adventure at the end of the semester, as well as host a chili cook-off at our local breadline! In our sewing and textiles classes our students have started an embroidering and seamstress business. They embroider unique designs on everything from aprons to beach towels, and hem almost all of the teachers’ clothing in the building! They use this money to make special items for children at elementary schools in need, and go on a textiles field trip!
