Keeping FACS Alive: Computerized Babies in Texas

promoting-facs-guideThis summer Learning ZoneXpress has been asking teachers how they are keeping FACS Alive in their classrooms and schools. We were thrilled with the response and are happy to share the stories. We would love to hear from you! Help us spread the awareness of FCS in the classroom today and share your story with us. Long live “Home Ec”!

Today’s story…

Our modern day middle school FCS class is "careers based", which is okay but not wonderful. I enjoy exposing students to college, financial aide, scholarship information etc..., but I think 7th grade is a little early to get excited about a career. On the other hand, these students are just beginning to make personal eating choices and it is obvious that Americans need an education about healthy eating and having a healthy life! My students enjoy learning to cook which alone curbs the likelihood of obesity. We also compare nutrients and calories in foods they eat. My students also experience computerized babies! This project has influenced more than one student to postpone parenting. It is difficult to go to college and have a wonderful career if you have a baby in high school. My students also enjoy sewing. This experience builds confidence and creates a lot of pride. The time management involved in this project is similar to time management on a job.
