This summer Learning ZoneXpress has been asking teachers how they are keeping FACS Alive in their classrooms and schools. We were thrilled with the response and are happy to share the stories. We would love to hear from you! Help us spread the awareness of FCS in the classroom today and share your story with us. Long live “Home Ec”!
FCS is extremely relevant! I can't express enough how important these skills are. My students, as well as the students of my fellow FCS teachers, are learning skills that I know will serve them well both now and as they graduate high school and strike out on their own.
The FCS students in my district are learning concepts that I know are vital to their success in their life. They are learning how to write resumes, successful job interview techniques, measurement equivalents in the kitchen, easy and economical recipes that can serve themselves and others, creative ways to use leftover ingredients, how to mend their clothing and create new and unique fashions, child development theories, and maybe one of the more important items-these kids are learning about education. They are being introduced to the world of teaching and what it takes to be an effective leader. We are playing a small part in developing the next generation of teachers and they are up to the challenge. This is why FCS is so important-these are the skills that are not only "the basic survival skills that everyone needs to know" (we have all heard that when we tell someone what we do for a living!) but these are also some of the skills that contribute to our completeness as a person. This is why FCS should not only stay in schools, but should be given every opportunity to flourish! This is an area where all students have an opportunity to shine-it is vital that we provide them with that chance.
