Keeping FACS Alive: Fashion and Families in Texas

promoting-facs-guideThis summer Learning ZoneXpress has been asking teachers how they are keeping FACS Alive in their classrooms and schools. We were thrilled with the response and are happy to share the stories. We would love to hear from you! Help us spread the awareness of FCS in the classroom today and share your story with us. Long live “Home Ec”!

Today’s story…

I began my teaching career at the age of 44 with a passion to instill life-long skills to our youth of today. I have had the privilege of teaching Fashion Design and Human Growth and Development at Montgomery High School in Montgomery, TX – and of being the town where I grew up. Skills that I pass along to my students include sewing, along with planning and participating in a fashion show which also includes community support. Students also have the opportunity to attend fashion related field trips, take part in fashion club service projects and other activities. In addition, guest speakers visit to share fashion career related ideas and opportunities. In Human Growth and Development, I am able to share my personal experiences as a mother. Whether students agree or not with my beliefs and knowledge, my goal is to at least better prepare them for parenthood and, hopefully, help them make the right choices for themselves and their future families.
