Keeping FACS Alive: New Jersey Needs More FACS

promoting-facs-guideThis summer Learning ZoneXpress has been asking teachers how they are keeping FACS Alive in their classrooms and schools. We were thrilled with the response and are happy to share the stories. We would love to hear from you! Help us spread the awareness of FCS in the classroom today and share your story with us. Long live “Home Ec”!

Today’s story…

I am one of the few Middle School FCS teachers in New Jersey. I have the opportunity to teach 8th grade students an introductory course that includes career exploration, job search skills, product development through child development and sewing skills, nutrition and b asic kitchen safety skills while working in the kitchen. The 47 day cycle goes quickly; but all students seem to enjoy the skills they learn. I have had the opportunity to be part of FCCLA for the past 4 years, and for the past two years have had middle school students qualify and travel to FCCLA National Leadership Conference. These students have extended their learning by connecting all the "dots" of their academic experience into the practical world of Family & Consumer Science.
