This summer Learning ZoneXpress has been asking teachers how they are keeping FACS Alive in their classrooms and schools. We were thrilled with the response and are happy to share the stories. We would love to hear from you! Help us spread the awareness of FCS in the classroom today and share your story with us. Long live “Home Ec”!
Well I would love to say Family and Consumer is alive however I just lost my position after 17 years of dedicated service to Marlboro township School district in Marlboro New Jersey. It was extremely relevant. I had the great pleasure of not only working with the general school population but also taught life skills to our autistic and special needs students. We incorporated all areas into FACS. I did a unit on kitchen math we discussed geography in our international foods unit . History in the origins of recipes and of course English language arts and reading in the dissection and breakdown of reading and following recipes.
I have a Master’s degree as a reading specialist but since it is a service degree not instructional another position is not mandatory. Needless to say my students were devastated by the elimination of the program . Children need courses like FACS. It's an area of great interest , a class where you can actually use all the subjects and put them to use
