Minnesota Educator Named 2012 National Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year

Lois Lewis, a teacher at Indus School in the South Koochiching/Rainy River School District in northern Minnesota, has been named the 2012 National Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. The award recognizes exemplary teachers who utilize cutting‐edge methods, techniques, and activities to provide the stimulus for and give visibility to family and consumer sciences elementary and secondary
education. Lewis will be recognized at the National AAFCS Conference in Indianapolis June 24 ‐ 27.

Lewis began her career as an Extension Agent before becoming a Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS)
teacher. “Lois has a very special, insightful and student‐focused passion for teaching students,” said
Donna Butterfield, president of the Minnesota Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. “She
exemplifies the qualities and characteristics of a creative Family and Consumer Sciences professional in
her classroom and in her community.”

Lois teaches in a rural setting where record temperatures are often set during the winter. She is the only FACS teacher at her school, but she continually works to ensure her students are getting a quality
education in all content areas of FACS. The program Lois entered for consideration for National Teacher
of the Year award is called “Healthy Initiatives.” She will present this program at the National AAFCS
Conference in June, and discuss:

  • The importance of funding and how to take advantage of funding opportunities related to
    nutrition/diet and health.
  • How “Healthy Initiatives” has made FACS more visible and given it status with students,
    administration, school board members, parents and the community; and how it has created a
    more hands‐on, student‐centered program, which has facilitated better learning for students.
  • How students are becoming more aware of the components of a healthy lifestyle and making
    better choices in their daily lives.
  • How the FACS program grew against the trend, from part time to full time over a period of
    years.

Lois has designed an outstanding educational program that utilizes methods, techniques and activities
where students are involved in making healthy choices. Not only are students involved, but it has also
created a lasting impression of the power of FACS curriculum both to students and to others in the
community. Lois is very involved in her community as well as her school, working with the Chamber of
Commerce and being involved in a radio talk show.
