An innovative, integrated service project for Middle School students. Developed & tested for four years.
• Students sew a denim quilt and become aware of local charitable organizations and the importance of cooperation and teamwork.
• Each activity is a thread to tie together multiple subjects.
Interdisciplinary Learning:
Math: Measuring, creating sewing template, and cutting.
English: Read and discuss stories about quilting and giving of yourself to others. Create advertising, PowerPoint presentation, and present at "Quilt Social".
Social Studies: History of American quilting, family history, social invitations, quilt show and tell, and how quilts were used as codes in the Underground Railroad.
Science: Recycling and the history and properties of denim.
FACS/Life Skills: Sewing techniques, cooking, service learning, and designing their own quilt (including their life story in a quilt).
Appropriate for grades 6-8.
