Building community is a part of our work as we encourage families. What projects have your students done to make a better community? My clothing and fashion class conducted a coat drive and made mittens before Thanksgiving. Students requested donated fleece from parents and three Wednesdays, students gathered to manufacture mittens.
They cut, sewed and trimmed 120 pairs of mittens in four different sizes and collected around 50 coats. It was very rewarding for the students that contributed and they were all proud of their work.
Learning ZoneXpress publishes an award winning curriculum developed by Karen Smith form Monticello called "patchwork of kindness" that involves quilts, literature, social studies and math. What a great way to share with the community and develop a skill. Check it out.
I think this makes me want to go sew and use up those piles of fabric. Does that rule "you can't buy more fabric until you sew what you have" really work?
