As we celebrate MyPlate's 4th birthday today, Learning ZoneXpress takes a moment to reflect on the day MyPlate was first announced by First Lady, Michelle Obama. We were first on the scene with educational resources and haven't slowed down since, so we thought it would be fun to share a couple memories from the team involved from the beginning.
Customer Service Manager, Shelly and Director of Educational Resources, Mary Beth both recall our designers running to their desks as the announcement was made. They were ready to work! Mary Beth remembers "standing around the screen watching the announcement and Barb high tails it to her desk to get the icon from the website. We had a MyPlate poster and handout ready the next morning! I remember people being really grateful and excited that we had these resources so quickly."
Linnea, our Product Manager, was highly involved in the content creation of these resources. She remembers the day vividly.
Thinking back, it was a kind of crazed time that’s for sure! I remember receiving a Google Alert on May 26th from WebMD saying that “a new Food Pyramid Replacement” was coming in a week’s time and emailing the link out to the team: http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20110526/food-pyramid-replacement-coming-june-2 This sent us scrambling formulating our game plan for design, what could be put on hold? We need to set up item numbers! We need to meet with printers about quick turn arounds, etc. It was kind of exciting not knowing what exactly was coming, but we were ready for anything that was going to be announced.
I remember I had a hard time sleeping the night before the announcement because I knew it was going to be a crazy time scrambling to put together content quickly for our resources. Morning of the announcement, we had a laptop set up for us to watch the press conference and Melanie was serving treats to celebrate, but the design team didn’t indulge because we had our work cut out for us. We had product designed and promoted within 24 hours of the announcement and promised having products ready for shipment within a week!
Here's a photo we dug up of some team members anxiously awaiting the announcement on June 2, 2011. Can you believe it's been four years?! Happy Birthday, MyPlate!
