This summer Learning ZoneXpress has been asking teachers how they are keeping FACS Alive in their classrooms and schools. We were thrilled with the response and are happy to share the stories. We would love to hear from you! Help us spread the awareness of FCS in the classroom today and share your story with us. Long live “Home Ec”!
After teaching FACS for 20+ years, I continue to see value in what I do and strongly believe that my students benefit as well. As the eating habits of the American people charge, I try to encourage my students to make careful, healthful choices and to develop good habits now to take them into adulthood. I try to introduce them to new and different foods, especially fruits and vegetables, that they do not eat at home. I especially enjoy my Child Development/Parenting classes where we incorporate field trips to visit our local hospital and nurse midwives, day care centers, preschools and early childhood programs and lower elementary classrooms. We focus on career opportunities in working with children as well as developing parenting skills for their future. My students know my classroom as the FACS room but also recognize it as the place where they learn "Skills for Living".
