This summer Learning ZoneXpress has been asking teachers how they are keeping FACS Alive in their classrooms and schools. We were thrilled with the response and are happy to share the stories. We would love to hear from you! Help us spread the awareness of FCS in the classroom today and share your story with us. Long live “Home Ec”!
I am so excited to share how my school Crestwood High is still implementing Family and Consumer Science skills to students. I have been a FCS teacher for 11 years now and I love my job. I have an FCS Co-worker who has been teaching 25 years plus. This year we will be getting a new FCS teacher to join us.
At our school we are teaching the students child development, family life, food and nutrition, and fashion design. From these courses the students are learning about prenatal development up to early childhood, they learn parenting skills, basic family life survival skills, how to cook and prepare healthy meals as well as shopping skills, how to sew and make garments.
Overall our students are learning the everyday basic survival skills they need in their everyday lives. We also offer the student organization FCCLA Family Careers and Community Leaders of America where we currently have 68 members and gained the 1st Vice President State Officer for the state of South Carolina. FCS rocks!
