Over the course of my nine-plus years as a dietitian, I have looked forward to several nutrition and education conferences, but none quite as much as the Nutrition + Physical Activity Learning Connection Summit coming up on September 18 and 19 in Arlington, VA. This Summit is what I call a meeting of the minds. Key thought leaders and decision-makers in education, health and wellness, academia, government, philanthropy, and business have been extended a personal invitation to participate in this stellar event. This thought-provoking and interactive event will delve into how nutrition and physical activity can have a positive and powerful impact on academic achievement and behavior in the classroom.
To go along with the powerhouse of attendees that will be participating in this event, the Summit is presented by a motivating force—the GEN Youth Foundation along with several partners with a health and wellness focus, including the National Dairy Council, the National Football League, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American School Health Association. Corporate sponsors include Quaker Oats, Microsoft Xbox Kinect, Dole and Hewlett-Packard.
The agenda is jam packed with engaging and inspiring speakers and activities. The event kicks off on September 18 with an interactive “Fuel Up, Play, Move” physical activity/nutrition showcase, which will allow participants to meet and get active in the Fuel Up to Play 60 Physical Activity Ring. NFL players and alumni, including London Fletcher, Ray Rice, Kurt Warner and Darrell Green will be meeting with and getting active students and participants.
The second day kicks off with an inspiring address by Dr. Satcher and Roger Goodell (NFL Commissioner). These key leaders will hear about the science behind the learning connection as well as explore the challenges schools endure and opportunities to overcome these hurdles to allow kids to succeed in the classroom. A top TV chef/personality is set to cook up a mouth-watering session on “crafting healthy school breakfasts.” By the end of the day and half Summit, not only will the influencers walk away invigorated, but they will also bring back a 30/90 day plan of action of how they will implement their new found insight.
I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas as I am counting down the days literally until take off (my flight that is) and the start of the Summit. Stay tuned for a follow-up blog detailing the happenings of this “meeting of the minds” event, including pictures and comments from key leaders.
