Our fearless and energetic leader, Melanie Nelson, recently returned from a trip to Chile. It was a trip laden with meaning: her birthday celebration, her support of the EPES Foundation & AHA, her love of family and friends and her joy in supporting healthy eating throughout the world. While the areas of Chile that Melanie visited were hard hit by the 2010 earthquake, she reports the phenomenal resilience of the people. They are rebuilding, they are supporting each other, they are hoping and most of all they are family. Here is a snippet of the gratitude they display to Melanie and others who support their efforts:
"The women from the sindicato (union) in the fishing village of Coliumo summed up what your trip means to us when they mentioned how important it is to be taken into account --and to not feel alone in this journey of working for health, reconstruction, dignity and justice. When you were here, we were together traveling to the camps in a van with a driver--but, for our staff, they are mostly on the roads alone often in the rain and cold working with hundreds of individuals and families who have been devastated -- but not defeated -- by their tremendous loss. When we are discouraged, knowing that there is back-up is so essential and empowering! You can see how far there is to go to really rebuild lives, homes and
communities. We are so grateful for your help."
